BREWING ADVICE

Peak flavor is typically reached between 2 and 6 weeks post-roast, when the coffee has fully opened up and its sweetness, clarity, and complexity are at their best.

All Moja coffees are roasted light to highlight their natural sweetness, clarity, and character. They can be brewed using any method depending on your preference, though we recommend brewing this coffee as Filter / Pour Over for the best expression of its profile.

SHIPPING

Orders are roasted on Sundays and shipped on Mondays. Once shipped, delivery takes up to 3 business days.

the producer

The Long Miles Coffee Project was founded by Ben and Kristy Carlson in Burundi in 2011.

After moving to Burundi, they saw firsthand the challenges facing coffee farmers in the country’s newly privatized coffee sector, from unstable prices to limited access to quality-focused processing infrastructure.

What began as a response to those challenges grew into the Long Miles Coffee Project, an initiative built around supporting smallholder farmers through better processing, agronomy programs, and long-term partnerships.

Today, Long Miles works with thousands of farmers across Burundi, Uganda & Kenya. Focusing on improving coffee quality while helping create more stable and sustainable livelihoods for the communities who grow it.

the coffee

This lot comes from Bumba Hill in Butanyerera Province, where coffee grows between 1,700–1,800 meters above sea level, in a cool highland environment that supports slow cherry maturation and a clean, structured cup profile.

Coffee here is produced by hundreds of smallholder farmers growing Red Bourbon on small family plots. During harvest, cherries are selectively picked and delivered to Ninga Washing Station, where they are fully washed and dried.

Cherries are hand-picked at peak ripeness, floated and carefully sorted, then de-pulped on the day of harvest. The coffee undergoes a two-stage fermentation, first dry for around 12 hours, then submerged in water for 24 hours before being washed and dried on traditional African raised beds for 16–20 days.

great coffee has its costs
  • FARMGATE - 13.95 USD/kg What the farmer was paid directly for this coffee.

  • FOT - 28.87 USD/kg International shipping, customs, import handling.

The price of coffee is influenced by many factors and the supply chain is complex. From farm to cup, costs are added at every stage: farming, selective harvesting, sorting, processing, drying, milling, storage, transport, roasting, and quality control. The above breakdown is a first step in the right direction to make that process more transparent to the consumer. It shows that the cost of high quality coffee reflects real work, real logistics, and real risks taken along the way.
